mental, social, and spiritual development of young people so that they may take
a constructive place in society.
In 1907 Robert Baden-Powell held the first Scout camp, on Brownsea Island, England. The purpose of the camp was to test his ideas on developing outdoor interests for boys such as camping, map and compass, open fire cooking etc. Scouting quickly spread around the world and began in New Zealand in 1908. Now there are over 40 million Scouts worldwide located in almost every country in the world. Girls were officially admitted to Scouting in New Zealand in 1988 and now comprise about 30% of membership. Scouting provides an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training, based on the Scout Promise and Law and guided by adult leadership. All adults regularly involved with Scouting are required to undergo police checks, are assessed for their suitability to be involved with a youth organisation and follow a strict code of conduct.
